I Can't Look At That Cross

In my minds eye, I can see the baby
Lying in the manger, wrapped in swaddling clothes
And I can see the young man teaching in the temple
I can see the prophet on the road

I can see the eyes of sweet compassion
Looking out upon the sea of lost
I can feel that upper room and almost smell the garden
But I can't look at that cross
I can't hardly look at that cross

The pounding nails
The mocking yells
I just shudder and I turn away
The blood and thorns
The body torn
It's more than I can take
His children crying
Crucify him
Well I know the builder counted the cost
But I can't look at that cross
I can't hardly look at that cross

In my heart I know I'm undeserving
My righteousness is filthy rags
My faith is filled with doubts
And sometimes I guess I understand
What went through the heart of Peter
When the Lord took out the basin and the towel

I can see Him standing before Pilate
Submitting to this world and to it's laws
But what Pilate washed his trembling hands of
Was poured out for me
Poured out from the cross
I can't hardly look at that cross

The pounding nails
The mocking yells
I just shudder and I turn away
The blood and thorns
The body torn
It's more than I can take
His children crying
Crucify him
Well I know the builder counted the cost
But I can't look at that cross
I can't hardly look at that cross
